Join the Kingman Island Rangers and Edlavitch DC Jewish Community Center for a special cleanup event in celebration of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. 

Spend a morning giving back to the community by cleaning trash on and near Kingman + Heritage Islands and the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail before it makes its way into the Anacostia River. 

Started by Repair the Sea, Reverse Tashlich is an innovative approach to Jewish environmental stewardship. In the ritual of Tashlich on Rosh Hashanah, the community goes to a body of water and symbolically casts their “sins” into the water to begin the new year with a clean start. Reverse Tashlich transforms that ritual into action—removing human “sins” from the water through environmental cleanup.

We’ll start by hearing from Living Classrooms about their vital work to protect the Anacostia River, then join together to collect trash along the banks of Kingman & Heritage Islands. 

This program is open to volunteers of all ages and faith backgrounds. Free to attend, but RSVP is required so we know how many to expect. You will be asked to sign a waiver and media release form while registering for the event. Know Before You Go: Living Classrooms will provide pickers, gloves, bags and instruction. Please wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. Please also bring a reusable water bottle and a bag to keep your belongings in.

The Kingman Rangers Program is operated by Living Classrooms through a grant funded by the District’s Department of Energy and Environment.
