Kingman and Heritage Islands

For Schools

Kingman and Heritage Islands are a great space for your students to get outside and learn about the natural habitats in DC’s urban environment. Several local nonprofit organizations provide field trip experiences for local students on Kingman and Heritage Islands.  

If you’re a teacher or school administrator looking to bring your students to the Islands, contact DOEE at kingmanisland@dc.gov or reach out directly to a local organization below to learn more about current offerings. 

  • Living Classrooms of the National Capital Region

    • Living Classrooms uses local green spaces to engage children and youth in thoughtful and experiential lessons in conservation, watershed science, climate change, and ecology.

    • Program Offerings for Pre-K-12th graders

      • 2-hour field trip: $200 (up to 40 students)

      • 3-hour field trip: $300 (up to 40 students)

      • 4-hour field trip: $400 (up to 40 students)

    • Buses or other transportation must be organized by the school.

  • Urban Adventure Squad

    • Urban Adventure Squad creates and leads outdoor learning experiences that connect students to nature using cross-curricular, standards-aligned activities relating to science, history, math, art, engineering, and writing.

      • Prices and planning vary based on the location, size, and learning goals of each program.

  • Aquatic Resources Education Center (AREC): Book free education programs Pre-K through 12th grade or professional development teacher trainings. The center exhibits a variety of fish, amphibians, reptiles, and invertebrates found in the District and the Chesapeake Bay. Reach out to the AREC team here or at doee.arec@dc.gov to learn more.
