Cleanup and Boat Tour with the National Building Museum

Explore Kingman Island, a man-made island that has become a vital natural ecosystem in the Anacostia River in Northeast and Southeast Washington, DC. This hands-on program combines a guided boat tour with a group cleanup, giving participants the chance to experience the river up close while helping care for it.

Led by the Anacostia Riverkeeper and Living Classrooms, the program explores the island’s history, its environmental transformation, and the importance of equitable access to waterfront spaces. Participants will learn about ongoing efforts to restore and protect the Anacostia River, how this work supports both environmental and community health, and future plans for Kingman Island and the surrounding river corridor.

Participants are encouraged to come ready to learn, connect, and make a positive impact on the future of the Anacostia River.

Schedule:

Groups will rotate between a one-hour boat ride with Anacostia Riverkeeper and one-hour cleanup with Living Classrooms from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM.

Advance registration is required.

This event concludes the National Building Museum’s season of Big Read programs, featuring Blackfish City as the Museum’s 2025 selection. Generously supported by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Midwest, the Big Read broadens our understanding of the world, our communities, and ourselves through the shared experience of reading and discussing a single book.
